Case Study: DC Comics

DC Comics Inc.

Background:

  • DC Comics was founded in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.
  • Malcolm was an entrepreneur and pup magazine writer.
  • An extension of Warner Bros. and devision of Time Warner.
  • Largely known for Superman, Wonder Women and Batman as well as many more.
Writers:

  • Company has had an array of different writers over the years.
  • Batman was initially written by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, back in 1939.
  • Each Superhero has now had numerous writers over the years since they were first created.

Competitors:
  • DC comics main competitor is Marvel Comics/Studios.
  • Marvel Comics was founded back in 1939.
DC had a head start over Marvel by five years by Marvel soon caught up.
Marketing Problem:
  • Marvel Studios has produced 48 movies, which grossed $11.8 billion in North America.
DC has only produced 29 movies and grossed just under $6.7 billion.

New Marketing Strategy:
  • Sense January DC comics is introducing new bold comics with heroes that not many people know.
  • These comics can be eventually turned into movies, and these comics will be what fans want.
    Marketing Manager:
  • I would produce movies with older characters such as: Martian Manhunter, Captain Atom and Booster Gold.
  • Die hard fans will be interested in seeing new movies with characters that have almost been forgotten.
