Case Study: DC Comics

DC Comics Inc.

Background:

  • DC Comics was founded in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.
  • Malcolm was an entrepreneur and pup magazine writer.
  • An extension of Warner Bros. and devision of Time Warner.
  • Largely known for Superman, Wonder Women and Batman as well as many more.
Writers:

  • Company has had an array of different writers over the years.
  • Batman was initially written by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, back in 1939.
  • Each Superhero has now had numerous writers over the years since they were first created.

Competitors:
  • DC comics main competitor is Marvel Comics/Studios.
  • Marvel Comics was founded back in 1939.
DC had a head start over Marvel by five years by Marvel soon caught up.
Marketing Problem:
  • Marvel Studios has produced 48 movies, which grossed $11.8 billion in North America.
DC has only produced 29 movies and grossed just under $6.7 billion.

New Marketing Strategy:
  • Sense January DC comics is introducing new bold comics with heroes that not many people know.
  • These comics can be eventually turned into movies, and these comics will be what fans want.
    Marketing Manager:
  • I would produce movies with older characters such as: Martian Manhunter, Captain Atom and Booster Gold.
  • Die hard fans will be interested in seeing new movies with characters that have almost been forgotten.

My 1st Marketing Assignment

Part 1:
I enrolled in BA 223 to learn the basics of marketing. I am a business student and learning how to market to you audience is extremely important. This course is also a requirement for my graduation an Linn Benton Community college. I hope to learn how to advance my family business on the market.

My major is business administration at Linn Benton Community college. I am not a marketing student but do see it necessary to learn the basics of marketing while I am in school. My main focus at school is Business Management, because that is what I strive to do later on after graduation.

I am most interested in learning how to market to different audiences through marketing. I also would like to learn how to keep your audience interested and invested in my family company.

Outside of class I am an avid outdoors men. I enjoy hunting fishing and going on hikes. I enjoy driving around in the woods on my free time seeing the beautiful scenery of nature away from town. I have been doing things outdoors with my friends sense we were kids, and still enjoy spending time together on the weeks.

Part 2: 
In the article "Eugene-based Bi-mart joins list of retailers limiting sales of firearms to buyers over 21," Bi-mart states that they are ensuring responsible firearm sales to individuals over the age of 21. This move was made after Fred Meyers, Walmart and Dick's sporting goods changed their own business policy to only sell firearms to those over the age of 21. These new policy have made a lot of controversy for the stores regulars who either agree or disagree with the new changes. The stores are sticking with this new policy and do not plan on going back.
